The Louisiana Republican congressman said on CBS News that “yesterday was a tough day” and he found it difficult to pay attention to the votes on the House floor earlier.
“It was hard to concentrate because my mind kept going back to Charlie and his family. It also brought me back to 2017, when a gunman tried to Utah campus shooting and about a dozen other members of Congress simply because of our political beliefs,” Scalise stated.
He continued, “We can’t allow this to become acceptable. Everyone must be accountable for the events of yesterday and commit to be better."
In the year 2017, Scalise was shot and seriously injured during an attack at the Republican baseball game, during which other players were also attacked.
“We cannot let incidents like yesterday become the norm,” he added. “Sadly, politics has eroded to the point where some people think disagreement justifies campus violence USA. That is not what America stands for.”
Investigators are still searching for the individual who shot Kirk. The FBI’s special agent in charge of the Salt Lake City field office, Robert Bohls, said the suspect was not concealed in the wooded area where the rifle used in the attack was recovered.
“We searched those woods and secured the area,” Bohls said at a news conference. “This was a targeted act. We don’t believe the wider community is at risk. But we are using every resource to track down the suspect—and we will.”
Law enforcement officials confirmed they have recovered the weapon believed to have been used in Trump ally killed, and have clear video footage of the suspected shooter still at large. The FBI has yet to confirm whether or not they have an identity on the suspect.
